Es muss nicht immer dunkle Phantastik sein. Die neueste Drabble-Anthologie aus dem Hause Shacklebound Books, wie immer herausgegeben von Eric Fomley, hat ein SF Thema. Bei Programmed Hearts geht es um Roboter und KIs und ihre … Gefühle. Genau, Gefühle – über sich, Menschen, das Leben und den Tod.
Wie immer, lernen wir dabei am ehesten etwas über uns selbst. Und wenn meine Story Transcendence beim Leser ein nachdenkliches Schmunzeln hervorruft, hat sie ihren Zweck erreicht.

Trembling With Fear: Year 6

Weihnachten 2022 hatte ich ein Drabble online in der Weihnachtsausgabe von Trembling with Fear, dem Magazin von horrortree.com. Inzwischen (schon Oktober 2023) ist (nahezu unbemerkt, sogar von den Autoren) die Jahresanthologie von Trembling with Fear (Trembling With Fear: Year 6) erschienen. Ich bin nur durch Zufall darauf gestossen. Bin zwar nur Schreiberling, aber als Hinweis an die Herausgeber: Wenn ihr noch nicht mal den Autoren Bescheid gebt, ist es kein Wunder, wenn niemand das Buch kauft.

At Christmas 2022, I had a drabble published online in the Christmas edition of Trembling with Fear, the magazine of horrortree.com. Meanwhile, (already in October 2023) the annual anthology of Trembling with Fear (Trembling With Fear: Year 6) has been released (nearly unnoticed, even by the authors). I only stumbled upon it by chance. I may just be a scribbler, but as a hint to the editors: If you don’t even notify the authors, it’s no wonder nobody buys the book.

Ungewöhnliche Zusagen / Unusual Acceptances

Normalerweise poste ich hier erst, wenn eine Veröffentlichung erschienen ist. Aber in den letzten 3 Wochen habe ich zwei Zusagen bekommen, die auf ungewöhnliche Art und Weise zustande gekommen sind.

Ende Januar bekam ich eine Absage von einem Magazin für eine SF-Geschichte, die auf einem Generationenraumschiff spielt. Das Besondere: Es war eine persönliche Absage in der die Herausgeberin mir schrieb, dass ihr die Ideen in meiner Story gefallen haben und auch warum sie trotzdem nicht zu ihrem Magazin passt. Und genau das war sehr hilfreich, denn so konnte ich ein „passenderes“ Magazin finden. Und schon kurz darauf hat das Sci Phi Journal die Geschichte gekauft.

Und Mitte Februar habe ich an einem kleinen ad-Hoc Wettbewerb der Black Hare Press Contributors Group auf Facebook mitgemacht. Eine Geschichte zu einem vorgegebenen Bild mit weniger als 200 Worten, direkt in die Kommentare schreiben. Zu gewinnen gab es ein T-Shirt. Naja, mit meiner kleinen Hopepunk Story konnte ich in einer Gruppe von Horror Autoren zwar kein T-Shirt ergattern, aber als BHP sich entschloss, aus den Texten eine Mini-Anthologie zu machen, war meine Story dabei.

Normally I only post here once a publication has been released. But in the last 3 weeks I have received two acceptances that came about in an unusual way.

At the end of January, I received a rejection from a magazine for a science fiction story that takes place on a generation-spaceship. The special thing: It was a personal rejection in which the editor wrote me that she liked the ideas in my story and why it nevertheless did not fit for her magazine. And that was very helpful, because it allowed me to find a „more suitable“ magazine. And shortly thereafter, Sci Phi Journal bought the story.

And in mid-February I took part in a small ad-hoc competition by the Black Hare Press Contributors Group on Facebook. A story with less than 200 words on a given picture, written directly in the comments. You could win a t-shirt. Well, with my little hopepunk story I was not able to snag a t-shirt among a group of horror authors, but when BHP decided to make a mini-anthology out of the texts, my story was included.

Edition 2 (The Stygian Lepus Magazine) in Print

Im April letzten Jahres erschien meine Geschichte Family Time online im Webzine Stygian Lepus.

Stygian Lepus präsentiert Fiction und Poesie aus dem Bereich Horror und Dark Fantasy.

Inzwischen erscheint das Magazin auch als E-Book und im Print. Im Zuge dessen werden nach und nach auch die älteren Ausgaben als Buch veröffentlicht.

So kann man Family Time jetzt auch gedruckt lesen.

Stygian Lepus presents fiction and poetry from the horror and dark fantasy genre.

In the meantime, the magazine gets also published as an e-book and in print. As part of this, the older issues are gradually being published as books as well.

Eerie Christmas 3

Zum Abschluss des Jahres noch eine Veröffentlichung auf die ich besonders stolz bin.

Feed the Children ist meine erste auf Englisch erschienene Geschichte, die über Flash-Fiction hinausgeht und nach Wortzählung eine echte Kurzgeschichte ist.

Sie ist Teil der Anthologie Eerie Christmas 3, die bei Black Hare Press erschienen ist und dunkle Geschichten zu den Festivitäten am Jahresende sammelt.

Der Titel lies mich sofort an die alten Eerie-Horror-Comics des Golden Age denken und daher kam auch die Inspiration für meine Geschichte.

To wrap up the year, here is a publication I’m particularly proud of.

Feed the Children is my first story published in English that goes beyond flash fiction in word count to qualify as a true short story.

It’s part of the anthology Eerie Christmas 3, published by Black Hare Press, which collects dark tales relating to the festivities at year’s end.

The title immediately made me think of the old Eerie horror comics from the Golden Age, which is where I drew inspiration for my story.

Auch dieses Jahr sammelt Black Hare Press die 2023 bei Dark Moments und auf ihrem Patreon erschienenen Geschichten in einer Jahresanthologie.

Ho Ho Ho (macabre minima)

Passend zum Jahresausklang ist bei Black Hare Press die Anthologie Ho Ho Ho (macabre minima) erschienen, mit dunklen Drabbles zur festlichen Jahreszeit.
Mein Beitrag Different Trophies zeigt, das Kinder ihren Eltern nacheifern und sie übertrefffen können, auch wenn das für den Weihnachtsmann keine so schöne Erfahrung íst.
Übrigens, wenn alles gut läuft, erscheint in ein paar Tagen eine weitere (deutlich längere) Weihnachtsgeschichte von mir.

Just in time for the year-end, the anthology Ho Ho Ho (macabre minima) has been released by Black Hare Press, featuring dark drabbles for the festive season. My contribution, Different Trophies, illustrates how children can emulate and surpass their parents, although for Santa Claus, it’s not such a pleasant experience.
By the way, if all goes well, another (considerably longer) Christmas story by me will be published in a few days.

Biokalypse

Im Eridianus Verlag ist die von Detlef Klewer herausgegebene Anthologie Biokalypse erschienen. Nicht nur das tolle Titelbild ist von Detlef. Er hat auch jede Geschichte illustriert.
Das von mir beigesteuerte Zombie-Jockey ist eine Sebsprawl-Geschichte, die sich aber von anderen deutlich unterscheidet, sowohl inhaltlich, als auch von der Erzählform her.
